25th Hour

Edward Norton stars in this film that was directed by Spike Lee. This tells the dark story of a convicted drug dealer on his last night of freedom before heading off to the slammer for 7 years. We are made to feel sorry for this criminal, but Norton’s character knows that what he did was wrong and shows great remorse. However, things get a little hairy when people start pointing the fingers at each other making him wonder who actually turned him in to the DEA.

The Wedding Planner

Let me tell you the story that was overlooked in this movie. It’s the story of a little boy. This little boy fell in love with a woman at a very young age. Both of them were children. As such he did everything he could think of to impress her. To show her he was fearless he ate mud. Unfortunately, all this did was disgust the young girl. Many years later, still smitten with love for this woman, her father arranges a marriage between the two.

Baseball Strike Averted - For the Next 4 years...

Today is August 30th and the deadline for the players union to reach an agreement on their contract. They reached that agreement at the 11th hour. That means that the Oakland Athletics can return to their third consecutive post-season run. Now the inevitable question for me. Aren’t you happy? I think they did enough damage by threatening the strike. We have no say in the negotiations. It’s not fair. In this economy people have less money to spend on entertainment.

Panasonic SV-AV10 Camera

I wanted a small digital camera that I can take to baseball games and stuff in my pocket. I also wanted something that could take digital movies. I found this little tiny device which is a little fatter and narrower than a deck of cards and it even added MP3 capability to it the mix. The camera, which does not have zoom, takes pretty decent pictures, and has the ability to record MPEG-4 videos.

The Adventures of Pluto Nash

The Adventures of Pluto Nash is one of those comedies that isn’t drop-to-your-knees-buckling-over-because-your-belly-hurts-from-laughing comedies. It’s one of those over-length-sitcom-turned-into-a-movie-because-the-writer-couldn’t-come-up-with-a-half-hour-story. I liked it all the same though. If you were disappointed, as I was, with this summer’s comedies, you’ll probably like this one. It has funny humor and a great cast. Randy Quaid playing a robot was pretty good, and the ending was really funny. I think the drop ins of modern products detracted a little though from the story.

Jay-J Reflections

I am a geek, and if that is a surprise to any of my loyal readers out there, then you really don’t know me at all. Tonight I was watching The Screen Savers on TechTV and they had a guy on talking about mixing music. He was describing the EQ setup and how to make all instruments sound the way they should. He made sense. I did a little digging on the Internet and found that he wasn’t just making it up, there’s a whole science devoted to it.

Lemon Jelly - Lemonjelly.Ky

Hello and welcome my friends. Let me tell you about the adventure I just had. I found myself in a strange and wonderful place tonight. A record store. Okay, the ol record shop isn’t that strange for me, I spent many many hours in one in high school. Tonight though I went into a section of the record store I haven’t ever ventured into before… the Techno Section. Why did I do this?

Neverwinter Nights

Neverwinter Nights has been hailed by many game critics as the best game of the year. I see it on everyone’s top ten list. I was jonesing for a new game, so I bought it. At $55 it was a little steep, but the reviews said it was worth it. Were the reviewers right? Yes they were. This game starts out with a great character selection, and a good training vehicle.

Trust Company - The Lonely Position of Neutral

As I was waiting in line at Tower Records to pay more money for two CD’s than I have ever paid in my life I saw a rack of “CD’s under $10”. Intrigued I spotted a “As Heard on KSJO” sticker right next to a $7.99 sticker. I vaguely remember hearing them on KSJO, and I decided to check it out. If you’ve read my recent reviews you’ll know that I like Filter, also if you know me, you know I like Tool and Disturbed also.

War Games

Hello and welcome to the first of many many 80’s movie reviews. A friend of mine asked me if I grew up wanting to be Matthew Broderick from the movie War Games, and after re-watching this movie for the first time in a couple decades I realized that this movie was a great influence on how my life turned out. That is a problem though. I thought if I was a good little computer nerd I’d end up with someone like Ally Sheedy.

Def Leppard - X

Today must be my lucky day. I purchased some truly great music and this CD is well on it’s way to an old favorite. I have always been a fan of Def Leppard, and my friends may make fun of me for that. I don’t care. They produce some really calming music. In fact I rate Hysteria off the Hysteria album as one of my all time favorite songs. I do however miss the songs like Pour Some Sugar on Me and Let’s Get Rocked.

Filter - The Amalgamut

This is the third outing for the band Filter. I have the previous one called Title of Record and I listen to it in the background as I’m programming. It somehow gets my brain working. It clears my mind of all the other distractions in my life. I was very fortunate with this new CD. It sounds a lot like the last one. That is what I am looking for in music.

Linkin Park - Reanimation

I really didn’t want to like this CD. I almost didn’t buy it. I doubt anyone will ever hear my cries, but I WANT NEW MUSIC!!! I want it all. I want new music. I want new rhythms. I want new lyrics. Is that so much to ask? Instead you give me 20 tracks of lyrics and rhythms that I already know. Did you hear me? I said I know this music very, very well.

Our Lady Peace - Gravity

Our Lady Peace’s fifth album Gravity is everything that I’ve come to expect from modern rock music. They have the same energy as such bands as Nickelback, Hoobastank, and Default. The current single that you may hear on the radio is Somewhere Out There. Containing 10 songs there doesn’t exist a single song that I would skip. At $11.99 at Tower Records (I missed the sale, I wonder how much less it was.

K-19 - The Widowmaker

Did you love The Hunt for Red October? What about Crimson Tide? If you did, you might be a little disappointed by this movie. I loved the other two movies, Crimson Tide a little more than Hunt for Red October, and I was let down with this movie. Maybe this was Harrison Ford’s way of saying he’s sorry for not playing Jack Ryan in Hunt. I may have been a little to mean there.

Austin Powers in Goldmember

This third installment of the Austin Powers franchise is every bit as funny as the second, and then a little more. Still not as good as the original, this episode extends it’s own reach to make fun of specific people, not just the James Bond films. Although Seth Green’s character has taken a wrong step, all the other characters have evolved nicely. The comedy is fresh, and the reuse of past humor fits in very well.

Monsters Ball

Okay, I have to tell you about this movie going experience even though I wouldn’t recommend the movie to all but the hard core movie lovers. The movie was “Monster’s Ball” and I saw it on Sunday the 17th of February 2002. This, as some of you may know, is the Sunday before President’s Day. So all the little kiddies and the uncontrolling parents were out and about the Great Mall in Milpitas, California.

A Knight's Tale

These days a movie preview is sometimes better than the movie itself. I was afraid the same would be true for this movie, and to an extent it was. I am writing mainly of the music. In the previews they took modern rock and added it to the medieval period film. In the film they used less 90’s music and more classic rock. This is not a bad thing. In fact it enhanced the movie.

Conker's Bad Fur Day

What do you get when you take Banjo Kazooie and add a lot of alcohol? You get Conker. If you watch MTV or Comedy Central you’ve probably seen the commercial for this video game and let me tell you, it is a game worth renting. However, please note I said rent it. I saw the advertisement, went to Fry’s and bought the game. When I got home I sat down and played it until the end of the game.

The Mummy Returns

The Mummy Returns had everything the first one had, but it had something at the end that killed its chances of being better than the first. The end’s computer animation lost something that the rest of the film had, realism. I’m not saying that the rest of the movie was realistic, but what I am saying is that the computer animation in the beginning and middle of the film was actually half way decent.

Hannibal

It’s been quite a few years since I’d seen Silence of the Lambs, but from what I can remember of it, Hannibal seems to be a worthy sequel. Ridley Scott did a great job of tying in parts from the first movie to help new viewers come up to speed on what is going on. I could swear that there was even a shot of Jody Foster in a car on one of the flashbacks.

O'Brother, Where Art Thou?

Whether you loved Fargo and The Big Lebowski or not, you will love this movie. As with all of the Coen Brother’s films, each of the characters were human. That is to say that none of them were super heroes. They were ordinary people, getting in a little bit of trouble, but when the time came they were just as afraid as anyone else would be in the same situation. This movie has it all.

High Fidelity

John Cusak teamed up with friends to turn a book by Nick Hornby that was based in London into a movie based in Chicago. When I saw this movie in the theater I loved it and saw it several times (paying full price each time). I was disappointed that the movie didn’t include some of my favorite parts of the book. Then it came out on DVD and those parts were included in the deleted scenes.

Almost Famous

I saw this movie a week ago and I liked it so much I went and saw it again today (It was either that or get a life, and hey, who am I kidding?). This movie was great. It had everything I was looking for in this true story. A hero that is a good guy, a plot that I care about, and great music. In my opinion, there are two types of true stories.
