The Girl in the Spider's Web

The Girl in the Spider's Web

What is it?

Lisbeth Salander is back, but this time starring the Queen… er… Claire Foy. This is the third Lisbeth in this series. Granted this movie is only related to the rest of the series by the characters themselves. The original author of the books died and this is the first book with a new author.

What’s it about?

Okay, that doesn’t tell you much about the story. Lisbeth is a bad ass woman that goes around being a vigilante and hacker. Frans Balder (the Office’s Stephen Merchant) pays her to steal some software that he wrote. Unfortunately she has to steal it from the NSA. No problem for Lisbeth. She hacks in and downloads it. But Ed Needham (played by LaKeith Stanfield) is able to track the hack, you know like they do in movies, and rushes out to get the software back.

Have they not heard of backups?

The whole movie seems to center around the idea that there is only one copy of the software. Wouldn’t you have multiple copies of it? Also, if the kid is the only one that can memorize the prime number sequence to gain access to the software, how was the NSA ever going to use it? Why was Frans so eager to get it back? Just seems like he could have lived a happy life if he’d just not tried to steal the software in the first place. Nobody would have figured out how to use it. Gah! I liked this movie until I started thinking about all of this.

Would you recommend it?

You know, no I would not. Watch the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo instead. Either one of them, but probably the one with Daniel Craig in it. This movie was ok, and it kept me intrigued for the most part. However, I did notice towards the end that I wished it would just end already.
